A Filipino Word. A Universal Idea.

Malasakit comes from the Filipino root sakit — to hurt. To have malasakit is to let another person's difficulty register in you as something of your own. It is care that costs something.

In Filipino homes, workplaces and barangays, malasakit is recognised instantly. It is the colleague who stays because the work is not finished for the team. The neighbour who notices before being asked. The leader who carries responsibility rather than distributing blame.

Empathy has become a familiar word in business. It is taught, measured and printed on values posters. But empathy, on its own, stops at understanding.

Malasakit begins where empathy ends. It asks what will change because of what we now understand — which decision, which budget line, which policy, which person.

Organizations are extraordinary at optimising what they can measure. Trust, belonging and dignity resist measurement, so they are quietly treated as optional.

Yet the organizations that endure are precisely the ones that protected those things. Care produces trust. Trust lowers friction. Lower friction compounds into speed, loyalty and resilience. The advantage is real; we have simply been calling it something else.

While Malasakit is deeply rooted in Filipino culture, its meaning is universally relevant. Every culture has traditions of care — ubuntu, omoiyari, sisu, solidarity.

Malasakit contributes something specific: a single word that fuses concern with responsibility, and a language for turning that fusion into leadership and action.

Artificial intelligence will absorb an enormous share of analysis, prediction and execution. What it will not absorb is judgement about people — who is affected, who is protected, who is owed an explanation.

That judgement is the work of leadership in the coming decade. Malasakit is a framework for doing it deliberately rather than accidentally.
